This is the second part of the report on the second day of our 15th segment.
第７２番札所曼荼羅寺 No.72 Mandaraji Temple弥谷寺から曼荼羅寺までは４ｋｍほど。１０時３０分に到着。曼荼羅寺は、当初、弘法大師の先祖・佐伯家一族の氏寺だったとのこと。山門から正面に見える本堂は曼荼羅の世界を現しているとか。本堂の屋根は新しく葺かれて、龍や虎の細工が光っている。
The distance from Iyadaniji to Mandaraji was only 4km apart and we got there at 10:30. Mandaraji is Kukai's ancestral temple and was first built by the Saekis. The main hall, whose roof was thatched recently anew with its tiger and dragon carvings, is said to depict the Mandara World.
笠松大師 Kasamatsu-daishi大師は亡き母・玉依御前の菩提を弔うために曼荼羅寺を建立、その記念に植樹したという松は「不老の松」と呼ばれたが松食い虫に食べられ、近年になって枯れた。その木を利用して作られたのが笠松大師像で、境内に置かれている。
The sad thing is that the Ageless Pine Tree in the temple courtyard died of Matsukui-mushi disease and was cut down some years ago. They made Kasamatsu Daishi statue out of it and placed it in the temple ground.
修行大師像、延命地蔵 Kobo-daishi & Emmei-jizo境内にはもう一つ大師像がある。そして延命地蔵も。なかなかの美男ですな。お二人とも。
There's another statue of Kobo-daishi and another of Emmei-jizo. Both looked very handsome.
第７３番札所出釋迦寺（しゅつしゃかじ） No.73 Shutsushakaji Temple第７２番から第７３番までの距離はわずか４００ｍ。山門に続く傾斜を利用して、大師像や様々な石仏像が並んでいる。山門を入る（１０：５０）とすぐ左に、捨身ケ嶽禅定（しゃしんがたけぜんじょう）の説明版がある。真魚（まお）と呼ばれていた大師７歳のとき、「自分は仏門に入って衆生を救いたい。願いが成就するなら、釈迦如来よ、姿を見せて欲しい。もし叶わぬなら、この身を諸仏に捧げる」と言って断崖から身を投げたところ、果たして如来が現れ大師を受け止めたとある。
No.73 Shutsushakaji Temple is only 400m away from No.72. Ascending the slope, we passed through its gate. There was a sign saying, "At the age of seven, Mao, (Kobo-daish was called when young) climbed to the cliffs above Shutsushakaji and vowed to save all beings before diving over the cliffs saying, 'If my desire is fulfilled, the Buddha will save me. If not, I just will die.' When he was falling down, the Buddha appeared and saved him by catching him in his hands. Owing to this story, the cliffs is now called Shashingatake (the Throwing Himself Cliff).
出釋迦寺本堂 Shutsushakaji Main Hall出釋迦寺の背後に見える山が捨身ケ嶽で、登るのには片道４０分ほどかかるという。登りたかったが、下の遥拝所ですませるこtにした。境内にある西行法師の歌碑や求聞持（くもんじ）大師像を見てまわる。虚空蔵菩薩の真言を百万辺唱える法を求聞持法といい、これを修めた大師は一切の教法を会得したという。大師の思いを胸に出釋迦寺を辞した。山門からもと来た参道をくだると、眼下に多度津の町が広がって見えた（１１：００）。
They say it will take 40 minutes to climb to the top of mt. Shashingatake. I wanted to, but I didn't. We took time watching the poem by Saigyo-hoshi engraved on gthe stone and the statue of Kobo-daishi in the courtyard. On our way back to No.72, we had a fine view of Tadotsu City under the gray clouds.
第７４番甲山寺（こうやまじ） No.74 Koyamaji Temple第７３番から７４番へは３ｋｍを少し上回る距離。曼荼羅寺の方に一旦戻ってから、さらにゆっくりと下って行く。ちょっと道に迷うことがあったが、１１時４０分に甲山寺に到着。バスで団体さんが来ており、彼らが般若心経をあげるのに合わせて、こちらも i-phone を片手にお経をあげる。この辺りは大師の故郷で、幼い頃の遊び場だったという。１１時５０分、別の山門から出て、次の札所に向かう。
It's only a 3km walk from No.73 to No.74 Koyamaji Temple. We got there at 11:40 and met many pilgrims who had come by bus. I chanted the sutra together with them using my i-phone. I hear Kobodaishi was born and bred and played around here. We left the temple at 11:50 and headed for the next temple.
第７５番札所善通寺 No.75 Zentsuji Temple第７４番から２０分ほどで善通寺に到着。１.６ｋｍほどの距離だ。善通寺は五岳山誕生院と号し、大師誕生の寺である。空海が修行した中国洛陽にかかる天津橋を復元した済生橋を渡る。御影堂から仁王門を通り、本堂へと向かう。大師が誕生したのは御影堂の奥殿だとのこと。ちなみに善通寺は、大師の父、佐伯善通の名前によっている。
In about 20 minutes we got to No.75 Zentsuji Temple. It was about a 1.6 km walk. Zentsuji is the birthplace of Kobo-daishi. His parents are Yoshimichi Saeki and Tamayori-gozen. And Zentsuji was named after his father's name Yoshimichi (Zentsu). We entered Zentsuji crossing the Saiseibashi Bridge, which was restored to the Tengshing Bridge in China, saw the Daishi-do Hall, passed through the Nio-mon Gate and headed to the Main Hall.
善通寺本堂 Zentsuji Main Hall
中門を通り、やがて本堂に至る。大きなお堂ながら、広い境内のなかでは、こじんまりとして見える。人々に混じって般若心経を唱える。右後ろには五重大塔が高々と建っている。我々は善通寺を通り抜けるかたちで、赤門から出て、善通寺を後にした。腹が減ってきた。讃岐うどんが食べられる昼食場所を探すことに（１２：３０）。
Passing through the Central gate, we finally came to the Main Hall. The Hall was huge but it looked cubby because the courtyard was so wide and large. I chanted the sutra with other people in front of the hall. The five-storied pagoda standeing behind me was huge too. After that we left the temple through the gate at the far end from the entrance. We were getting hungry. We decided to find agood place to eat Sanuki udon (noodle). 
本郷通り Hongo Street
赤門から一直線に伸びる本郷通を土讃線まで歩いたが、ほとんどの店がシャッターを閉じている。善通寺の駅なら食堂があるかもと期待して右折した。善通寺という名前にしては想外に小さな駅舎である。手動で風よけの扉を開けて駅舎内に入る。小さな小売店があるのみだった。振り返って駅前通りを見ると「四国」といううどん屋が目についた。営業中だ。半分セルフサービスの店で、安いのが魅力。僕は味飯とうどんを注文。しばらく風を避けて体を温めるため、ゆっくりと時間を過ごすことにした。
Most of the stores on both sides of Hongo Street were closed. So we went near to JR Zentsuji Station and at last found an udon restaurant named Shikoku. We got into it to shelter ourselves from gthe cold winds. 
善通寺から金倉寺へ From JR Zentsuji Stn. to No. 76 Konzoji Temple
うどん屋「四国」で１時間ねばった。食事代は４５０円。でも女将は、私たちが店を出るとき、優しい笑顔で「寒いから気をつけてね」って言ってくれた（１：４５）。四国の人は、優しい！ で、寒い中、気をつけながらまた次の札所を目指したわけ。善通寺から金倉寺（こんぞうじ）までは３．６ｋｍとしてあるけど、もう１ｋｍほど歩いてあるからここからは３ｋｍほど。しかし、金倉寺に到着したのは１時間後だった。立派な仁王像がが迎えてくれる。
I ordered udon and ajimeshi (seasond rice) and paid 450 yen for them. We stayed there long, for almost an hour. We felt cozy there with no icy winds that had annoyed us. The lady storekeeper thanked us and was kind enough to say, "Take care, for it's terribly cold outside," when we left the restaurant. We took care and began to walk to No.76 Konzoji Temple. I thought it was only 3 km to the temple, but it took about an hour to get there. The great Nio statues standing at the gate welcomed us. 
金倉寺 No.76 Konzoji Temple
鶏足山金倉寺と言う。弘法大師の甥の智証大師が生まれた寺。広大な境内に楠の巨木が大きく枝を張っている。上さんは境内の「乃木将軍妻返しの松」に至極興味を示している。日露戦争に突入する少し前、乃木将軍は善通寺第１１師団初代師団長に就任し、２年と７カ月の間この寺に住んだ。師団本部へは馬で通ったのだそうな。テレビの「坂の上の雲」では、日露戦争の様子が最近放送されたばかりで、私も少し興味を持った。「大晦日のこと、東京から静子夫人が面会に来たが、乃木将軍は会わずに追い返した。婦人は、しばらく境内の松のたもとにたたずんだものの、夫の意を汲み、帰っていった。」明治の軍人の気骨をしのばせる逸話である。本堂前に大きな数珠が滑車に掛けてあり、これを引くと、数珠玉がカチカチと音を立てて落ちるのが面白かった。
Chisho-daishi, a nephew of Kobo-daishi, was born at this temple. There was a huge camphor tree in the center of the courtyard reaching its boughs to the sky. There was also a pine tree known as "Tsuma-gaeshi no Matsu." It's a legendary tree at which General Maresuke Nogi made his wife Shizuka return to Tokyo when she came all the way to see him there. When she was told to go back, she stood for a while at the foot of the pine tree, understood what he had in mind, and went back to Tokyo. It was just before the Russo-Japanese War. 
チサンイン丸亀善通寺
金倉寺を３時に退出。今日の宿チサンイン丸亀善通寺に向かう。ここは、遍路道を少しそれるが、北さんが探してくれたお手頃のビジネスホテルである。ホテルの向こうに丸亀総合運動公園の奇抜な建物が見える。予定よりかなり早く、３時２５分にチエックイン。風呂に入って体を清め、休息した後、６時に僕の部屋にあつまって３人で食事をした。僕は買ってきた焼酎を飲んだ。つまみは上さん、北さんが用意してくれた。インスタントラーメンとおにぎりが夕食だ。いっしょにテレビを見て談笑しているうちに、２００ｃｃの酒が効いてきて、僕は眠り込んでしまった。
We left Konzoji just at three and started to walk to Chisun Inn Marugame Zentsuji. It's a business hotel Kita-san had reserved for us to stay that night. We checked in at 3:25. I took a bath and spent time leisurely watching TV and listening to music on my i-phone. At six, we got together and had supper in my room. I had a cup of shochu (Japanese distilled spirit) which I had bought on our way here and ate tsumami (nibblies) Ue-san and Kita-san kindly offered me. I ate instant noodle for "dinner." We had a fine chat but about an hour later, I got drunken and fell asleep. I woke up when they were leaving my room. "Good night, Ue-san and Kita-san.
